THE PROCESS

Maturationby Infrasonic Wave

Our white-oak barrels rest on a concrete foundation 6–7 km from the nearest active launch pad, physically coupled to the ground. The infrasonic surface waves of every launch — Rayleigh waves, P-waves, S-waves, and peak particle velocity — transmit through the slab and into the barrel, converting a hydrostatic system into a hydrodynamic one. The liquor is forced into the oak stave wall, extracting esters, lactones, and phenols the way years of natural aging would.

We monitor a triaxial geophone in real time, log every launch signature, and tag each barrel with the mission that shook it. Each rocket produces a distinctive infrasonic signature, enabling comparison of waveform-driven maturation across missions. It's the most rigorous quality-control story in craft distilling.

THE ORIGIN

What happens whenrockets shake your barrels?

We didn't plan this. Our white-oak barrels rest on a concrete slab 6–7 km from the nearest active launch pad, coupled to ground that has been feeling the rumble of rockets since 1958. One slow Tuesday, a technician noticed a cask of whiskey maturing during a heavy-lift launch tasted different. Better, actually.

We had the seismograph data. We had the barrel logs. We ran the correlation — and then ran it again. The infrasonic signature of a major launch: low-frequency surface waves, Rayleigh waveforms rolling through the slab, P-waves and S-waves coupling into the barrel wall. A previously hydrostatic system converts to a hydrodynamic one under vibration, forcing the liquor into the oak and extracting esters, lactones, and phenols the way years of natural aging would.

Now every barrel is intentionally timed to nearby launches. We monitor a triaxial geophone in real time, log every launch signature, and tag each cask with the mission that shook it. It's the most rigorous quality-control story in craft distilling.
